A nationally recognized physician-scientist, Dr. Urquhart studied Biomedical Engineering at Harvard as a National Scholar, earned her M.D. and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins, and conducted award-winning research at the Hospital for Special Surgery. After fifteen years in private practice, she pursued an Executive MBA at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School to confront the insurance challenges facing modern medicine.

EVERYONE reading this review at least have experienced one problem with insurance companies. It feels like a fight that cannot be won because we never have the necessary knowledge to fight or because there is literally no other option but to accept what we are told. But through the surgeon, this changes because she provides us with the basic knowledge and truths behind every bureaucratic decision. This way, we can empower ourselves and achieve benefits thanks to previously tested strategies. Enough of feeling like a number or a code. We are people who are suffering and need help.

Erica writes clearly and effectively and proves that insurance companies are trying to make as much money as possible from their clients with little or even no regard for their health and treatment. Just about everyone has a friend or relative who has gotten tangled in insurance red tape and was not able to get the treatment or services they needed. Only when we start banding together and demanding something better will we be able to solve this serious problem.

The way I looked at today’s healthcare has been completely transformed by this book. Erica Urquhart opens up the hidden parts of today’s healthcare system (like its many bureaucracy) that many patients don’t know about, and explains how these bureaucracies affect medical decisions. I found reading the book to be both empowering and unsettling, because the book explains the types of frustration that many people experience but can’t put a name to. The author’s first hand experience gives the book credibility and creates urgency to resolve the many complex issues in healthcare. I finished the book feeling more informed, more cognizant about healthcare and furthermore motivated to question how the healthcare system really works.
The American healthcare system runs through structures most patients cannot see or fully understand. Erica Urquhart’s experience as both caregiver and patient shows how much that reality affects people. Knowing how the system works does not protect you once you are the one asking for help. What stood out most to me was the lack of transparency about how the system truly operates.
